Do it
- 1
Take a passport photo
Booths inside Marquês de Pombal, Baixa-Chiado, and most major Metro stations. €5 cash.
- 2
Go to a Metro ticket office
The big stations have staffed desks. Avoid the machines — they don’t issue new cards.
- 3
Ask for a "Cartão Navegante Personalizado"
They’ll print the card on the spot with your photo. €7 one-time fee.
- 4
Load the monthly pass
€40 for Metropolitano, €30 for Municipal. The card is valid from the 1st of each month — buy it on the 28th and you get a week free.
Words you'll hear
Navegante
The transit pass. €40/month covers metro, buses, trams, trains, and ferries across the metro area.
Common questions
Is the monthly pass worth it if I mostly walk?
Below roughly 18 trips a month, pay-as-you-go on a Viva Viagem card is cheaper. Above that, the €40 navegante wins — and it removes the mental maths.
Does it cover trains to Cascais and the ferries?
The €40 metropolitan version covers the whole Lisbon metro area — CP suburban trains, Carris, metro, trams, and the river ferries included.
Where do I actually get the card?
Espaço navegante counters at major interchanges (bring ID and a passport photo). The personalised card costs €7 and takes minutes on a quiet day.
