EU vs non-EU

EU/EEA: EU/EEA citizens apply with passport/ID and NIF. Your CRUE (or even proof you've applied for it) covers the legal-stay part.

Non-EU: You'll be asked for your residence permit or the visa you entered on. If an employer is hiring you, they can request the NISS on your behalf. Let them.

Do it

  1. 1

Check if your employer handles it

If you're starting a job, HR usually requests the NISS as part of onboarding. Done — skip the rest.

  2. 2

    Apply via NISS na Hora

seg-social.pt → "NISS na Hora". Upload passport/ID and NIF, fill the form, submit.

  3. 3

    Watch your email

The number arrives as a PDF. No letter, no card — save the PDF somewhere you'll find it.

  4. 4

    Register on Segurança Social Direta

Once you have the NISS, create your online account. You'll need it later for declarations, sick pay, and (if freelancing) quarterly filings.

Words you'll hear

NISS

Your social security number. Required before your first day of work or freelance invoice.

Segurança Social

Social Security. Pensions, benefits, and the freelancer's quarterly declarations.

Common questions

My employer says they'll handle it — should I apply anyway?

No — one NISS per person, and duplicate requests create exactly the mess you'd imagine. Let HR do it and ask for the number.

Is there a card?

No card — the number arrives as a PDF by email. Save it next to your NIF paper; you'll be asked for both together.

Do I need a NISS if I'm not working yet?

Not immediately. You'll need it before any employment, freelancing, or benefit — and since it's free and painless, a quiet week is the time.
